Summary of Guidelines

Lead Level 0-4.9

Not considered lead poisoning. Repeat according to standard care.

Lead Level 5-9.9

Repeat capillary within 12 weeks. If confirmed:
  • Refer for WIC services
  • The health department must perform a visual investigative home visit within 30 days of the second confirmed high lead level.
  • Continue to repeat every 12 weeks until level <5.

Lead Level 10-14.9

Repeat capillary within 1-4 weeks. If confirmed:
  • Refer for WIC services
  • The health department must perform a visual investigative home visit within 30 days of the second confirmed high lead level.
  • Continue to repeat every 12 weeks until level <5.

Lead Level 15-44.9

Repeat capillary within 1 week. If confirmed:
  • Refer for medical nutrition therapy. Lead prevention diet counseling should be provided within 2 weeks.
  • The health department must perform a visual investigative home visit within 1 week of the second confirmed high lead level.
  • Continue to repeat every 1-2 months until level <5.
